AEMET has been participating continuously in the Antarctic campaigns at the Juan Carlos I research station, located on the Livingston Island (in South Shetland Islands close to the Antarctic Peninsula) since February 1988, when the station was established. Every year, AEMET contributes with four meteorological specialists, two in atmospheric instrumentation and two in weather forecasting, in the two successive phases of the campaign. They are supported and coordinated by the AEMET Antarctic Group, from Spain.

On the one hand, it is intended to have long observation series in Antarctica (at the Juan Carlos I and Gabriel de Castilla). On the other hand, we provide weather forecasts to support the logistical operations on the ships and research stations in order to carry out the activities associated with the scientific projects under the coordination of the Spanish Polar Committee.
